Four Reflections of Psalm 144
“There is a warrior’s energy in this psalm, worthy of David at the height of his powers, then David of Psalm 18.” - Derek Kinder
Kinder goes on in his commentary to say that Psalm 18 is quoted “more as a stimulus to prayer than as plain thanksgiving”.
As we read this Psalm and notice the carefully selected list of other songs mentioned earlier, we should not mistake it for mere repetition. Kinder observes that, while David expresses similar themes as before, his intentions have shifted. This serves as a reminder for us to avoid being mechanical or unthinking in our own prayer lives.
“In Psalm 144, David is extremely personal as he confesses who he had found God to be. He says ‘my Rock,’ ‘my loving God,’ ‘my fortress,’ ‘my stronghold,’ ‘my deliverer,’ and ‘my shield’.” (James Montgomery Boice)
Let this be the way we pray it as well.
With David mentioning his daughter, Charles Spurgeon mentions: “We desire a blessing for our whole family, daughters as well as sons. For the girls to be left out of the circle of blessing would be unhappy indeed.”
May we be more aware in our prayers to pray for blessings like this.
