In this semi-regular post, I will share what I enjoy in life that you might also appreciate (or at least get to know me and my quirks better). In addition, I will share things to stir godliness in your life.
My Favorite Quotes
A little about myself: Quotes inspire me. They inspire me to worship, think, repent, and act. We all need words to inspire us on our journey. I will share some here at times.
Here is one for today:
“Get away from any man who always argues every time he talks.”
-Abbot Pastor, Desert Father
I love this quote.
This is an efficient application and a good commentary on what Solomon wrote in Proverbs 20:3,
“It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling” (ESV)
This is wise. It deserves thoughtful exercise in life.
To befriend or not befriend?
Being distanced from someone who quarrels all the time will serve as a guard to your heart and attitude, because you may adopt their demeanor and practices. Face it, people like this can be exhausting to be around. They emotionally drain you with the complaints they share or the defensiveness they are always talking about with you. They also burden your soul if you are the target of their argument.
Being aloof means being uninterested or keeping from being involved in what is going on. “Getting away” from someone like this is distancing yourself from sources of strife, conflict, and contentions.
The Scriptures have a picture of such a warning (see Proverbs 17:14 ESV). This picture involves a small leak trickling and then breaking through a hole to turn into a gusher. Stopping contention before a quarrel breaks out may involve no longer associating with that person. For your self-care in Christ, I urge you, remember that the Lord warns in His word that “Bad company can corrupt good morals” (see 1 Cor. 15:33)
Are you that person?
However, upon examination, you may find yourself to be that foolish person, tempted to meddle and quarrel. You do it first within your heart when you are alone. Then, unleash on others and everybody.
Heed the particular action of a fool as described in Scripture. Repent and submit to the Spirit’s work for you to at least start exercising silence. For “even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent” (see Proverbs 17:28)
This practice of being quiet will provide you with the time to develop honorable manners, such as being slow to anger, seeing the best in others, and constructively bringing solution-oriented ideas to contentious issues. This is better than being the one who argues every time they talk.
My Jelly Babies
“Would you like a Jelly Baby?”
I love these! It is a British sweet. You can buy it in America. Similar to gummy bears, yet less sweet and better! Usually coated with something so it’s not sticky to the touch.
After you buy your bag, have a seat, open it up, and try the first one. After you have tried a few, grab your phone and find the origin story of these sweets. It is a bit of a rabbit hole, yet interesting.
Oh! And yes. It’s been made popular by my all-time favorite time-traveling show, Doctor Who- Specifically the Classic Era.
Opa!
