In this semi-regular post, I will share what I enjoy in life that you might also appreciate (or at least get to know me and my quirks better). In addition, I will share brief thoughts about godliness.
My Favorite Bible Verse
They (whoever “they” are) say you shouldn’t have a favorite Bible verse. Over the years, God has calmed my fears, comforted my angst, and a guided me to repent through His word, leading me to several favorite verses.
The one I share today is simply one of the first intentional verses I began to memorize outside of memorizing the catechism in my childhood church upbringing.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33
Share in the comments your first Bible verse you intentionally memorized.
A word about memorization:
"I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you." Psalm 119:11
Struggling with motivation to remember God's word and what God says?
One reason may be that sometimes we equate memorization with a negative learning style of from our schooling. But for the child of God, memorization is about remembering wise instructions and true affections of our Heavenly Father. Think for a minute - in relationships of trust, love, and high value, it's easy to pay attention and remember what people say and do.
The reason Christian Scriptures are different than other religious books is that they reveal themselves to be the living, active words of God (2 Timothy 3:16). We are to value, to cherish, to treasure or to store up the Bible because God speaks to us through it
Like any would-be mother who journals, scrapbooks, and photographs her journey into motherhood and beyond, Mary "treasured up all these things pondering them in her heart" (Luke 2:19) about the events of Jesus's birth. She valued the miracle and faithfulness of God.
Pray for God to sanctify your motivation for memorization by concluding, like Peter, where else can we go? Only God has the words of eternal life. (see John 6:68)
A Testimony of Assurance- Someone May Need to Read This.
The Christian Reform Church has developed a document called Our World Belongs To God: A Contemporary Testimony (see here)
These 58 testimonies are hymnal-like in their presentation. After reading through the story of how it came into being, the author of that history shared the comfort he and his family received from one of the paragraphs that spoke of God’s tender care. They framed it for the author’s hospital room while fighting cancer.
May you find comfort as well in whatever battle or darkness you find yourself.
Highly Recommend For Life and Godliness
