Confessions of a Satisfied Overcomer
When I'm anxious over government, election and leaders. Living for something greater than our country.
Question 1: Why so downcast oh my soul?
Answer 1: My soul is anxious about my country’s future and the leaders in charge.
—
Question 2: Do you know, oh my soul, why your hope should be put in God?
Answer 2: I confess, while difficult to admit in my flesh and feelings, your truth does not waiver.
My hope is in you(see Romans 5:2-5) For you are called Most High and rule the kingdom of men and set over it the lowliest of men. (Psalm 22:28, Daniel 4:17). You makes nations great, and destroy them; you enlarge nations, and disperse them. (Job 12:23)
While I do not understand fully how, you do what is according to your will among the hosts of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth (Daniel 4:35).

Question 3: Where then, oh soul, is your anxiety coming from?
Answer 3: Help my unbelief!
In this broken, evil, sin-filled society where I live, things are not as they should be, in peace, policies, and people. I truly feel like the sojourner you describe us to be (1 Peter 2:11). Longing for your coming and future restoration (Revelation 22:10).
I pray your kingdom comes and your will be done (Matthew 6:10). But see no evidence to my liking. I need to trust and lean not on my understanding (Proverbs 3:5), but I still feel no comfort at times.
Saddened by corruption and maddened by sin, my angst grows as I look to the country I love and the people I care for, continue to be mistreated as I try to live out your command to do justice, find mercy, and walk humbly before you (Micah 6:8).
—
Question 4: Where does your help come from?
Answer 4: My help comes from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth (Psalm121:2). My understanding will never be complete. My faith is not in my feelings. My country and its leaders are not my savior and grace (see Psalm 96:5).
I kneel before the one who made me and saved me for eternity (see 2 Timothy 4:18). I can rest for the Lord has dealt bountifully with me (Psalm 116:7). He is my helper and has sent the Helper to live with me (see John 14:15). Jesus said there will be trials and tribulations (John 16:33).
In sending the Holy Spirit, the church was comforted (Acts 9:31). To that realization, I ask for the filling and more of his presence (see Ephesians 5:17,18), casting this burden for Jesus to take the weight of anxiety away (1 Peter 5:7).
Forgive the idolatry in my heart that places too much hope in this world’s system and people. Forgive my pride that causes me to forget that you do as you please (Job 38-40:5) and don’t need me or anybody to fulfill your work (Acts 17:25).
Save me once again in your sanctifying work to become more like Jesus and to love you better in thought, word, and deed.

Question 5: In your submission and repenting, do you still worry?
Answer 5: Worry does remain at times, but it is by choice that I regularly lean on you and ask you to dispel it. That is where talking to God in prayer helps. (Philippians 4:6).
I know that with your command to be strong, courageous, and not anxious, you empower what you command despite my feelings.
Remembering your truth helps as well. For it forms the foundation of arguing this anxiety out of my spirit and places the eyes of my heart toward you instead of the problem.
—
Question 6: What truth can help, at this moment, with this worry for you?
Answer 6: I echo the hope Paul has in Romans 8:38, 39 But I emphasize in this case; “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, … nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
I cling to that love for he personally cares that I should not be anxious over government or influenced by it (Rom 12:1-3).
I cling to that love because he personally provides through His powerful word and presence the peace my mind and heart is looking for (see Isaiah 26:3.
I cling to that love because I know His love doesn’t fail like human love. While I may not be able to fully see what the Lord is doing, I can trust he will work all things out (Romans 8:28) and I will be better for it and the Lord will be exalted because of it.

Question 7: So what am I to do, oh my soul?
Answer 7: In calming the anxiousness of my soul, and stepping forward in courageous faith I need to remind myself of your truth that I am a citizen of heaven and I’m waiting for my Savior to fully rule as King (see Philippians 3:20).
In light of that, I continue to enjoy my relationship with God and draw near to Him (Hebrews 10:22) to experience His peace and provision. I step forward to your throne of grace to intercede for my leaders as 1 Timothy 2:1-4 commands and explains. For I know the truth that our leaders hearts are in your hand and you turn it wherever you will (Proverbs 21:1). Which I can prayer for you to pull their hearts toward you, your righteous ways and ultimately asking you to save their souls, if they indeed do not know you that way.
In light of that I will continue to strive for living for the greater kingdom purposes. Beyond our leaders and and this land I live in. I will continue to pray that the work of my heart by your Spirit would be to grow my hope and allegiance to the King of kings Jesus Christ who is the Most High.
In the strength of the Lord and in spite of my worry I will answer the call of Revelation 13:10c which says: “Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints”. I will press on in trust, move forward in worshipping you and love you and others better than I have previously. I continue to do good where I’m called to, trust in your working hand and sharing the gospel, in speech and in behavior.
All in order to glorify your name and exalt a greater King to come!
